Stress Corrosion Cracking
Cracking under sustained tensile stress in a corrosive environment — the reason 7050-T7451 exists.
High strength 7000-series aluminium in the peak aged temper is vulnerable to stress corrosion in the short transverse direction, which is why thick structural sections move to 7050-T7451 despite its lower strength. The failure needs no cyclic load and gives little warning, so it is designed out by alloy, temper and grain direction rather than inspected for.
