PMI
Positive material identification — on-the-spot alloy verification against the marking and certificate.
A bar of 4340 and a bar of 15CDV6 look identical, and so do 718 and 625. PMI by X-ray fluorescence or optical emission checks the actual chemistry of the piece being shipped rather than trusting a tag. On titanium, nickel and high tensile work we do it on every lot, before despatch, against both the marking and the certificate.
