Solution Treat and Age
The two-stage heat treatment that gives precipitation hardening alloys their strength — solutionising, then controlled ageing.
Solutionising dissolves the strengthening phases and quenching holds them in solution; ageing then precipitates them in a controlled size and distribution. In 718 and Waspaloy, hours and temperature decide whether the result meets AMS properties or merely looks heat treated. The furnace must be surveyed to AMS 2750 and the charts kept, because the only evidence of a correct cycle is the record.
